‘The Legal Apprentice’ 2020: Students can win a place as a solicitor apprentice at the prestigious London-based law firm

UK’S GOT LEGAL TALENT! KINGSLEY NAPLEY OPENS ENTRY PROCESS FOR ‘THE LEGAL APPRENTICE’ 2020

Law firm Kingsley Napley LLP is delighted to announce the kick-off of ‘The Legal Apprentice’ competition for 2020.

First year Key Stage 5 students from all 4,168 secondary schools across the UK are invited to compete to win a place as a solicitor apprentice at the prestigious London-based law firm.

This is the second year of the competition and follows the huge success of Kingsley Napley’s inaugural contest last year, which saw over 3000 pupils sign up from 308 schools and sixth form colleges.

Kingsley Napley’s Senior Partner, Stephen Parkinson, comments:

“We were blown away by the response to our first Legal Apprentice competition – the calibre and enthusiasm of participants was astounding. We hope the schools that took part will field candidates again this year and that others will also sign up, having seen what the competition can offer.

“The Legal Apprentice helps sixth form students understand more about the law, testing their analytical, interpersonal and drafting skills.

“Our aim with the competition is to demystify the legal profession and to encourage more pupils from all over the country, particularly those from non-traditional backgrounds, to consider a career in law.”

Kingsley Napley has devised a series of teaching aids to accompany The Legal Apprentice programme, available to all who enter. These are designed to help teachers support their students with the tasks and the basics of the legal topics covered in the competition.

The competition is open to a maximum of 900 school teams who will compete in three heats.  Four teams will then be invited to take part in a live final in June 2020.

Legal Apprentice 2019 winners, Una Campbell and Luke McCallion from St Mary’s Grammar School in Magherafelt, Co Londonderry are both now in the running for a legal apprenticeship at Kingsley Napley, meaning they could gain a law degree and complete their professional training without incurring any debt.

Catriona Donoghue, Head of Careers at St Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt, who successfully coached her pupils all the way to the final, said:

“The competition allowed students to take on the role of a solicitor and to develop key skills such as time management, analysing information and effective legal communication – all through a fun medium. Their involvement in the competition has proved to be very useful when writing personal statements for university applications as the students can speak with confidence about their understanding of the role of a solicitor and they can make a much more informed choice regarding their future.”

Runner-up prizes include internships and cash prizes of up to £200.

HOW TO ENTER

This year’s competition is limited to 900 teams, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration will close on 17 December 2019 or when 900 teams have entered. Students can register at www.thelegalapprentice.co.uk. To register students will need to nominate a teacher to oversee their involvement in the competition.
