New State of the Arts Vocational Centre opens in Ellesmere Port

West Cheshire College will be starting the New Year term in the brand new £10 million Ellesmere Port campus. The campus will be home to the Hair and Beauty, Performing Arts, Art, Design and Media, Sports Studies and Public Services departments and new state-of-the-art facilities bring the College into the 21st Century to ensure that it is able to continue to provide first class vocational education.

For example, the hairdressing and beauty therapy departments boast professional salons with the latest nail tables and beauty suites, which will be open to the public, as well as a new sauna and steam room.

Music and music technology areas have the latest equipment and facilities and performing arts students will be moving into a refurbished theatre and a new studio theatre.

There will also be first class facilities for Sports Studies and Information Technology, including Interactive Games Technology, where students will have access to flat-screen computers and smart boards in seminar rooms. Outside there will also be an all weather five-a-side pitch and tennis courts.

The redeveloped campus also includes a brand new Welcome Centre and reception area, the “Port Café” ““ a bright, modern refreshment area and Nescafe bar and new art and design facilities, which were opened by Ivan Lewis MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Skills and Vocational Education, in April 2003. A brand new ABC Neighbourhood Nursery, which was opened in March by Bob the Builder, also brings benefits to students and local residents.

College Principal Sara Mogel said: “We are very proud of our new facilities and we hope that the development will help us attract learners who had not thought lifelong learning was for them, improving the skills level in the community and increasing the employment prospects of young people.

“This was an ambitious project, but after three years of hard work, the people of Ellesmere Port now have the facilities they deserve.

“We are now looking forward to pressing our plans for the Chester campus to ensure that we can provide first class accommodation across both our campuses.”

Full-time courses due to start in the new building from January include the Childcare Cadet scheme, Interactive Games Technology, Multimedia, Introduction to Access to Higher Education and Access to Higher Education.
