What all EU students should do to continue living in the UK after Brexit

Your rights to study and live in the UK will not change until 31 December 2020.

If there’s a deal

You’ll have until 30 June 2021 to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. If you arrive in the UK during the transition period after Brexit happens, you will also be eligible to apply.

If there’s a no-deal Brexit

You’ll have until 31 December 2020 to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if you’re already living in UK when we leave the EU. If you arrive after we leave the EU, you’ll need to apply for European Temporary Leave to Remain instead.

Course fees and funding to study in the UK

You’ll be eligible for ‘home fee’ status and student finance support to study if your course in England starts in the 2020 to 2021 academic year or before. This will be available for the duration of your course, provided you meet the residency requirements.

You should ask the relevant student funding body if you’re eligible for any support if you’re studying in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Studying in the UK from 2021 to 2022 academic year

You’ll be able to apply for courses in England from September 2020. We’ll provide details about your fee status and eligibility for student finance when they are available.

Erasmus+ placements in the UK

Your placement should continue as normal if it has already started and you are in the UK when Brexit happens. Contact your college or university in the EU if you need more information.

Placements starting after Brexit

If you’re an Erasmus+ student from the EU doing a placement in the UK, ask both your home and UK education providers whether your placement will be affected if there’s a no-deal Brexit.

If you’re studying in England you will not be eligible for support from Student Finance England to complete your Erasmus+ placement.
