SFA’s Geoff Russell announces new annual skills competition

FE News catches up with Geoff Russell, chief executive of the Skills Funding Agency, as he announces another legacy from WorldSkills: an annual skills competition designed to showcase the many benefits that Further Education can bring to the UK

The new annual event aims to not only encourage future learners to become more involved in different skill areas, but also raise standards in teaching and qualifications. Russell points to how the mainstream FE systems of some of the UK’s competitor nations in WorldSkills produce graduates who enter straight into competition level, whereas there are many others, including the UK, where FE graduates have to work with specialist experts to help prepare them to compete. The new annual skills competition aims to reduce this gap.
