Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills, is an independent, non-ministerial department of the UK government. Established in 1992, Ofsted reports directly to Parliament and inspects a wide range of services for children and young people, including schools, colleges, early years providers, childcare, and further education (FE) institutions.
Although Ofsted works closely with the government, it operates independently and provides impartial judgments about the quality of education and care in England.

Ofsted inspections look at a wide range of areas, including curriculum quality, teaching and learning, safeguarding, leadership, and outcomes for learners.
In September 2025, following a major consultation, Ofsted confirmed significant reforms to the inspection framework by introducing their new Report Cards. These new report cards will come into effect from 10 November 2025 for early years, state schools, and FE and skills providers, and from January 2026 for independent schools and initial teacher education.
FE and skills providers are a core focus for Ofsted, with around 80% currently graded as good or outstanding. Under the new framework, inspection areas include:
