Apprentices set for national finals

Gower College Swansea is getting ready to host the national finals of a prestigious Apprentice of the Year competition on 24 January.

Among the competitors are three Gower College Swansea students who are hoping to secure a place in the Grand UK Final in Cheltenham in March.

Plumbing student Oliver Degay is hoping to become the third consecutive Gower College Swansea student to reach the finals of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year, following in the illustrious footsteps of Luke Evans in 2018 and Mariusz Gawarecki in 2017.

Meanwhile, Elliot Jones and Tom Clarke will represent the College in the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition. They will be hoping to repeat the success of Jay Popham, who made it to the finals in 2018.

The competitors will each be given a task to replicate a ‘whole house’ plumbing and electrical installation.
These UK competitions are organised every year by SPARKS and HIP Magazines for students on Level 2 and 3 courses.

“Students get a lot out of these competitions,” says Natacha Fielding, Managing Director of SNG Publishing Ltd. “They make new friends, gain confidence in their abilities and enjoy the challenge of the competition.”
