Brexit refers to the process of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU) and the subsequent restructuring of its relationship with the EU and the rest of the world. The term “Brexit” is a combination of “British” and “exit.”
Formal negotiations between the UK government and the EU began in March 2017, leading to the finalisation of a Withdrawal Agreement in November 2018. This agreement outlined the terms of the UK’s departure, including a transition period, financial settlements, citizens’ rights, and provisions for the Irish border.
On December 24, 2020, the UK and the EU reached a trade and cooperation agreement, known as the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. This agreement set out the terms for their future economic relationship, covering areas such as trade, fisheries, and cooperation on security matters.
