A VIP launch party has marked the beginning of Barnsley’s new online radio station, The Vibe, supported by Barnsley College.

Guests, including radio presenter and former Barnsley College student Stephanie Hirst, came to Barnsley College to celebrate the launch of the town’s new indie music radio station. Based in the heart of Barnsley, the station plays purely indie music and presents shows for everyone including local comedians Pete and Chris’ The Indie Annual, The Opium Hour and The Reds Report.

The radio station was created by Barnsley College Media Teacher Lee Barber, who has extensive experience in the radio industry. Lee said: “The Vibe originated after a meeting I had with an indie-rock station in London last year. I knew that this type of music would work well in the Yorkshire area, and quite a few of our students would buy into it. As soon as I got back to Barnsley, the project began.

“The radio station serves two main purposes. One is to allow students to gain valuable experience in broadcasting, alongside developing soft skills such as communication, team-work and time management. The second is that it allows the College to integrate itself within the community by giving local musicians, broadcasters and comedians a space to communicate with the town. Our policy is that we look for passionate, creative people who have something to prove and stories to tell.”
