Draft Skills for Life Strategy launched at FBU conference

The Fire Brigade Union has launched its draft Skills for Life – A Whole Organisation Approach strategy at its Union Learning Representatives” Conference at the Fire Service College in Moreton-in-Marsh. The strategy document was launched by FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack and supported by Des Williamson, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Bucks Fire and Rescue Service. The conference was also addressed by Billy Hayes, General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union and Chair of the unionlearn Board, and Liz Smith Director of unionlearn.

The Skills for Life strategy document is a key step forward in recognizing that improving the basic skills of all workers means more confident employees and directly benefits not just the thousands of men and women who work for the Fire and Rescue Services, but also all those who rely on their services. Following a 90-day consultation period, a finalised Skills for Life strategy will be drawn up and work will begin on encouraging staff to return to education.

Launching the Skills For Life consultation document the FBU General Secretary said: “This draft strategy gives the Fire Brigades Union and the UK Fire and Rescue Service the opportunity to address Skills for Life issues. It endeavours to promote good practice and ensure that all staff in the Fire and Rescue Service have access to numeracy, literacy and ICT learning opportunities. I encourage all sections of the Fire and Rescue Service to take the time to read the document and submit their views within the consultation period.”

Liz Smith, unionlearn director said: “The FBU is doing great work in making sure that its members are equipped with the numeracy and literacy skills that they need for dealing with everyday life. Those who work for the Fire and Rescue Services are among the most dedicated and courageous people in our society and they surely deserve the opportunity to unlock their potential through lifelong learning.”
