Cutbacks Hit Courses and Service Provision

UNISON, the public services union, has voiced its concern over proposed funding cuts to the Further Education sector. The union fears that the cuts will have a serious impact on specialist courses such as sign language. UNISON has discovered that courses in British Sign Language could face cancellation due to the reduction in funding.

Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary, criticised the plans saying: “We already know of one college, a beacon provider of sign language courses, which will be forced to either scrap the delivery of sign language or increase class sizes to an unmanageable level.

“ĀThese courses are attended regularly by all kinds of public sector workers who may come into contact with deaf people. If these courses face closure we will severely disadvantage a section of the community.”Ā
