Overview
This session will equip you to adapt your scheme of work to facilitate the inclusion of topical and engaging themes. The basic structure can be adapted during the year to respond to news stories/ pop culture trends.
Objectives
The content will cover:
- Using topical resources to engage learners and increase their perception of the relevance of English;
- Creating an outline scheme of work (SOW) which facilitates skills delivery via topical resources;
- Identifying opportunities for contextualisation.
Delegates will be able to create a resource template that can be adapted easily around new topics. This will create a positive energy around English provision which translates into raised profile across the college.
Learners are acutely aware of how well a lesson has been prepared and will respond much more positively to content that is fresh.
While it is important that learners are aware of their English targets and learning objectives, it is far more important that they are engaged with the lesson and think of it as more than a revision of English skills, by applying these skills to topics they can relate to. This translates into improved behaviour in class and ultimately improved outcomes.
