From education to employment

Cardiff and Vale College students take part in Two Player Games – an award winning BBC film

Students from across Cardiff and Vale College have taken part in the BBC Wales ‘It’s My Shout’ short film series – both in front of and behind the camera.

It’s My Shout, who specialise in finding and developing new talent for the film industry, came to the College earlier in the summer. Working with the College’s Be Epic enrichment team, managing Director Roger Burnell recruited 50 students from the Creative and Hair and Beauty departments. Following auditions, two principal actors and 11 supporting artists were chosen for filming.

Hair and Beauty students assisted with hair and make-up and the crew from CAVC were mentored by staff from BBC and other organisations involved in the filming. CAVC’s Retail and Commercial Department provided the College’s salon, urbasba, as a base for filming at City Centre Campus and provided catering for the cast and crew.

At a premiere screening of the films at the Millennium Centre, Two Player Games – starring CAVC students Anya Trudigan and Louise Cheetham – won the ‘audience prize’ for the most popular film among those present. The College’s staff choir Aspire also performed at the premiere.

Louise Cheetham, a 20-year-old Performing Arts student from Cardiff who took one of the lead roles in Two Player Games, said of her experience: “I really enjoyed the whole experience from start to finish. When I applied for It’s my Shout I didn’t even think I was going to get a callback, let alone be cast as a main character.

“When I first read the script it made me incredibly happy because I do want there to be more LGBT characters that are well-written and properly presented in television shows, movies and theatre. So, the fact that I was chosen to play the part of Joleen made it extra important and special for me.

“This was my first time acting in front of a camera as I am more used to performing on a stage, so I was slightly nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. Our director let us have three rehearsal sessions a few weeks before we began shooting, so we could gain the confidence that we needed to perform at our best.

“The three days that it took to shoot the film were brilliant and everyone that I worked with made me feel so relaxed, while also inspiring me to work harder. Anya is such an amazing young actress and I am so happy that I got to work with her on this project – her lovely personality and natural talent made it easy to act alongside her in all of the scenes.”

The initiative was led by the College’s Be Epic enrichment team. CAVC Enrichment and Entrepreneurship Co-ordinator Lisa Jones said:

“Be Epic is an entrepreneurship, enrichment and employability programme we off to students studying at Cardiff and Vale College. Students greatly benefit from the activities, gaining the skills and confidence they need to progress on to work or university. The enrichment project in collaboration with It’s My Shout has given young people a chance to explore the film and TV industry and has provided them with a fantastic real life experience with leading professionals.”
