Teaching qualification helps student boost career prospects

A student from Sussex Coast College Hastings has taken her career to new heights after successfully completing the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cert TESOL) qualification.

Wendy Davis joined the Cert TESOL course back in January and wanted to boost her teaching opportunities abroad by having an accredited teaching qualification.

Wendy, who has previous teaching experience as a German and French teacher, was able to study the TESOL course alongside a number of supply teaching roles.

“I was attracted to the TESOL course because I had taught English as a Foreign Language in summer schools, which I had enjoyed, but I thought that if I had the TESOL qualification it would open up new opportunities for me, and it has.” said Wendy.

Since completing the course Wendy has had the opportunity to gain even more experience during two teaching placements in Italy and Austria. The placements, organised by English in Action, allowed Wendy to teach English in schools in Grosseto in Tuscany and Leonding, just outside Linz, in Austria.

“I really enjoyed teaching English in Italy and Austria. Grosseto is a very picturesque town surrounded by a medieval wall about half an hour from the coast. I taught in the mornings from 8.00am until 1pm and the students were aged between 13 and 14 years old.”

“During my time in Austria I was on the outskirts of Linz on the Danube, teaching students aged between 10 and 12. They were slightly longer days as I taught from 7.55am to 1:30pm, but I was free to explore Linz and the neighbouring area in the afternoons and really enjoyed sampling the Apfelstrudel and Wienerschnitzel!”

The Cert TESOL course is an internationally recognised qualification certified by Trinity College London. It runs for 22 weeks and is studied part-time, one day and one evening a week. The course is £1,290 and starts each January and September.

“I enjoyed studying at SCCH. Everyone was very friendly, the facilities were very good and the TESOL course was excellent. My tutors were also excellent, very informative and very helpful.”
