STAR Awards Ceremony Recognising Tutors and Outstanding Leadership

Two winners from the Learning and Skills sector will be celebrating after scooping a national award at last week’s glittering STAR Awards ceremony.

The awards ceremony, held at The Brewery in the City of London, saw Sally MacGregor from Runshaw College in Preston awarded tutor of the year by sponsors Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK). Clive Weston from Accrington and Rossendale College won the award for Outstanding Leadership, sponsored by Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL).

1,585 people were nominated out of 3,400 individuals for this year’s STAR award. The judging panel was initially in charge of choosing the winners for sixteen categories, but a surprise double win in the first category announced took this year’s tally to seventeen. All winners were applauded for their dedication and for making a real difference to the lives of learners with their willingness to exceed expectations and work above and beyond the call of duty.

Diverse Pool of Talent

The winners come from diverse workplaces such as Further Education colleges, community-based providers, private sector providers and employers, adult education institution and UK online centres. This year’s categories included the recently introduced Team Award, Volunteer and Subject Learning Coach Awards, all designed to champion the unsung heroes of the learning and skills sector.

Winners also received a top prize of £2,000, a trophy and certificate. The winning team took away £5,000 as well as their trophy and certificate.

Steve Palmer, executive director of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) in Lancashire, said: “The STAR awards recognise the very finest individuals who work in the vastly diverse learning and skills sector. My warm congratulations go to both Sally and Clive for their excellent achievements. Their dedication has given people confidence, given them self-belief. They have inspired people to reach their potential. These awards recognise all that.”

Next year’s award nominations open in January 20006. For more information, please click here or telephone the STAR Awards helpline on 0800 652 0528.
