Rotherham College Carpentry and Joinery students help build home for rescue chickens at local animal charity

Level 1-3 students studying Site Carpentry and Joinery at Rotherham College, Dinnington campus have had the opportunity to work on a real-life project with Thornberry Animal Sanctuary and their 500 rescue chickens.

The animal sanctuary have been asked to take on their biggest re-homing to date, rescuing 500 battery hens that lived in dark and cramped conditions, and putting them up for adoption for a small fee of £3.

As they needed a temporary home, that was spacious and comfortable while they are being re-homed in the community; our students were tasked with building and fitting a new pen. While Level 1 students assisted with the building of door and windows, Level 2 and 3 students had the role of fitting the new windows and doors to the pen, making sure the area was safe.

Terry Elliott, Site Carpentry and Joinery tutor, said, “Working with Thornberry Animal Sanctuary has been an enjoyable project and at the same time creates opportunities for valuable work experience for our learners, as well seeing how their hard work can make a difference.

“As a department we’ve got a great working relationship with Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, and we look forward to taking on further projects with them.”
