From education to employment

Success for Cyber Security Graduates at Bletchley Park

The second graduation event for Qufaro’s online CyberEPQ (Extended Project Qualification) was held at Bletchley Park on Saturday 8th September.

Equivalent to an AS-level, the CyberEPQ is a stepping stone for students looking to go to university or the world of work. Certified by City & Guilds, it counts for UCAS credits in university applications. Many of the students, however, are already in careers and are looking to move into the rapidly expanding cyber security industry.

79 students successfully completed the course and many of those who were able to attend were joined by family and teachers. Certificates were awarded by information security guru, Professor Fred Piper, in front of the rebuild of Colossus at The National Museum of Computing.

Many students were awarded the additional recognition of membership of a newly created category of the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP) and all students that successfully completed the course were reimbursed their fees through sponsorship by Deloitte.

Dr Budgie Dhanda, CEO of Qufaro, said, “Through the skills they have gained on this course, these students will be making an invaluable contribution to keeping the country cyber secure in the coming years.  For those that are looking to move into the cyber profession, they now have a breadth and depth of knowledge that will make them attractive recruits.  For those that choose a different path, they do so knowing how to identify and protect themselves, and the organisations they work for, from the real, online threats that are growing every day.”

Graduate, Eugene Chen, commented: ‘The CyberEPQ has given me a very broad overview that I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else at A-level.’

Registration for the 2018/19 CyberEPQ is open from Monday 17th September.

ABOUT BLETCHLEY PARK QUFARO: Bletchley Park Qufaro was formed in 2015 with the aim of growing the national cyber security talent pool by finding and developing talented individuals from across the UK and to provide support to enable them to enter university, apprenticeships and employment.

Qufaro has developed and successfully delivered the UK’s first and only EPQ in Cyber Security.  This was developed by a consortium of education and cyber security partners to help provide a starting point for anyone considering a career in cyber security. The qualification is taught using distance learning tools with its content guided by the National Occupational Standards in cyber security.
