TEDI-London Receives Capital Funding from the Office for Students in Support of its Engineering Education Programme

The Engineering & Design Institute London (@TEDILondon), the capital’s only degree awarding higher education provider wholly dedicated to engineering, is delighted to announce that it has been granted more than £600K in capital funding from the Office for Students (OfS), the higher education regulator in England. The funding will support the delivery of a unique engineering programme to both TEDI-London’s current students, who were welcomed in September of last year, and future cohorts.

Founded by Arizona State University, King’s College London and UNSW Sydney, TEDI-London was launched to transform the way in which engineering is taught; through a project-based curriculum that is delivered in collaboration with industry partners and focuses on real-life issues. 

Professor Judy Raper, Dean & CEO at TEDI-London explains:

“The hands-on, practical way of learning enables our students to develop a better understanding of the mathematic and scientific theories and principles that underpin engineering. Alongside this, working with industry partners on real-life challenges means that they also learn broader skills to prepare them for the workplace, such as collaboration, project management, communication and social awareness.”

Students are taught in a purpose-built campus containing state of the art equipment, such as 3D printers and CNC machines, as well as a variety of learning resources, such as materials for prototyping and existing products to take apart, analyse and rebuild. Students also benefit from an advanced IT network to participate in online learning, submit project work and make use of engineering software packages. The funding received from OfS will contribute towards the maintenance and further development of the TEDI-London campus and equipment.

Rewarded as part of an overall investment that saw 100 universities, colleges and other higher education providers receive over £135 million collectively from OfS, funds were allocated through a competitive bidding process. Successful bids were required to demonstrate how public money would be spent and managed effectively, in addition to meeting one or more priority categories:

• High-cost subjects of strategic importance, such as laboratory-based subjects in science, technology and engineering, veterinary science, archaeology and healthcare disciplines in medicine, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, and allied health professions.
• Enhancing graduate employability and the skills needs of employers and industry and therefore local and regional economies.
• Part-time and other forms of flexible provision.

Concludes Professor Raper;
