The Right Reverend Lord Julian Henderson inspires students at Blackburn University Centre 

The Right Reverend Lord Bishop of Blackburn, Julian Henderson has inspired students during his visit to Blackburn University Centre. 

Bishop Julian came to speak to students about his role as a member of sitting member of the House of Lords.  

Students from courses including: Early Childhood Studies, Social Care and Wellbeing, Computing, Law, Working with Children and Young People, Business and Teaching and Learning Support (Primary), attended the session, which was organised by the University Centre’s Law Society. 

He spoke of his journey to becoming a member of the House of Lords, his role within the House of Lords, and some of the debates he has heard and participated in. 

He also discussed the importance of the House of Lords as an institution, the parliamentary law-making process and then about how the law protects children and vulnerable people. 

Bishop Julian was appointed to the House of Lords, as one of the 26 Lords Spiritual in 2020 where he has spoken since on many topics, including in support of those living in deprivation in the county; on ending inequality; on the environment; rural communities and on law and order. 

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed being invited to the Law Society meeting and speaking to students about what means to be in the house of Lords, and how this important institution works.  

“The students were very engaging and asked some very interesting questions. It was a very positive way to spend an afternoon and I’m very grateful to be invited.” 

Rohan Quinn, President of Blackburn University Centre’s Law Society who arranged the talk said: “It was an honour and privilege to welcome the Rt. Reverend Lord Julian Henderson to Blackburn University Centre as our Law Society’s first guest speaker.  

“It was an excellent opportunity for students from a number of courses to hear first-hand about experiences from a sitting member of the House of Lords and interact with questions of their own.”

“His insight into The House of Lords was invaluable to our students who I know gained a lot from the experience.”
