Lesson observations are commonplace, but do they lead to improvements? If we don’t know the answer to this question, should we be doing them?
This is the first of two webinars in which Steven will summarise some key research into the effectiveness of lesson observations and consider how this research can be used to develop effective quality improvement systems.
The later webinar will build on the first by looking at the specific role of observations in improving apprenticeships.
Managerial lesson observations are widespread but inherently unreliable. This doesn’t stop too many leaders placing a great deal of faith in observation outcomes when they evaluate the quality of the courses and apprenticeships they run.
Steven will make the case that the most effective lesson observation schemes have a clear purpose and are embedded in either the quality improvement or quality assurance strategies. He will explore how providers may need more than one methodology for observations depending on the purpose of the observations.
Objectives

- Identify the value of observations to a training provider as well as their limitations and the detrimental effects they can have;
- Look at the different ways of observing lessons according to the purpose of the observation;
- Consider the skills and attributes of an effective observer;
- Develop some ideas for refining the lesson observations you carry out.
