Welcome to Part 4 of our Quality Cycle series, aimed at leaders and managers within further education & skills providers looking to delve into the key stages of an effective quality assurance cycle.
The self-assessment report is a key document in the quality cycle for all providers, it’s used by Ofsted to help risk assess providers for inspection, so it must be honest, robust and evaluative.
This session is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience in self-assessment and quality improvement plans. We will explore how to best approach self-assessment, what to capture and how to write bullets and evaluative text.
Many self-assessment reports are overly long, too descriptive and lack judgement. We will consider what to include and what’s best left out to help fine tune your writing skills.
Delegates will gain a clearer understanding of:
• Recognising the need for an evaluative self-assessment
• How to gather evidence and identify impact
• Identifying strengths and areas for improvement
• Writing better bullets that evaluate and demonstrate impact
• Match the SAR to the quality improvement plan

Facilitators
James Houston is a former senior manager and current governor in learning and skills with extensive experience on advising and supporting providers in all aspects of quality assurance. He has supported many providers produce more succinct and evaluative reports that have been recognised by Ofsted at inspection. James is also a former inspector with both the ALI and Ofsted. He currently supports quality improvement at FIN and ALIN and manages the resources available on the FIN member website.
