Fairer Funding: The case for a graduate levy

UCU response to HEPI paper proposing a graduate levy

Responding to ‘Fairer Funding: The case for a graduate levy’, published today (29 Nov) by the Higher Education Policy Institute, head of policy and campaigns at the University and College Union (UCU) Matt Waddup said:

“It is hugely refreshing to see a contribution to the higher education funding debate which recognises that employers should pay for the graduate skills they rely upon. UCU has long campaigned for a rise in corporation tax to cover the cost of scrapping tuition fees without hitting small employers or public services.

“It is increasingly clear that the current system predicated on spiraling student debt is unsustainable and in need of urgent reform. The Augar review is a great chance to move towards a fairer funding system which ensures business pays its fair share.”
