From education to employment

OPmobility supports the next generation of engineers

OPmobility in Measham is helping shape the next generation of engineers through its partnership with Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC), offering valuable hands-on experience to T Level students and apprentices.

The company, a global leader in automotive solutions, has supported a number of BSDC Engineering learners through industry placements, providing them with essential insights into real-world engineering environments.

One of those students, Jonathan Hill, completed his T Level placement with OPmobility last year and is now undertaking a Mechatronics Engineering Apprenticeship with the company. Jonathan said: “I chose the T Level because it offered a great mix of practical and theoretical learning. One of the biggest highlights was the occupational specialism – working from a real design brief and making parts to precise tolerances. Now, through my apprenticeship, I’m applying that knowledge in a real job setting, and it’s helping me build a strong foundation for my future in engineering.”

Current T Level Engineering student, James Parry is also benefitting from the partnership, developing both technical and personal skills through his placement. He said: “The T Level has helped me develop tremendously. It’s given me skills I wouldn’t have gained through theory alone; the blend of practical and academic learning really makes a difference.”

The company also engages apprentices across other departments. Katie Turner, Data Analyst Apprentice, said: “Every day is different, and I’ve already contributed to some big projects. The support from both the College and the workplace has been fantastic.”

Speaking about the impact of T Levels and apprenticeships, James Llewellyn, Plant Director at OPmobility’s Measham facility, said: “We use a lot of bespoke equipment and have very specific operational needs – from paint lines and injection moulding machines to new product development of new products. That means we need the right people with the right skills, day in and day out.

“These programmes are incredibly important because they give students real experience in the environments they’ll actually be working in. The T Level allows us to work with students early on to see if it’s the right fit on both sides. Engineering companies thrive on the skills and experience of their people, and that’s why T Level and apprenticeship programmes are so valuable.”

Grace Johnston, Learner Employment Placement Officer at Burton and South Derbyshire College added: “Our partnership with OPmobility is a brilliant example of how T Level placements and apprenticeships can work hand in hand to support both learners and employers. The company provides an exceptional environment for our students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom, gain confidence and develop the skills that will prepare them for long-term careers in engineering.”

Burton and South Derbyshire College is encouraging more local employers to get involved in supporting students through work placements, helping to develop the next generation of skilled professionals.
