From education to employment

Animal Discovery Day Success!!!!!!

Filton College is pleased to announce the success of its first Animal Care Discovery Day programme.

Discovery Days target young people aged 14-18 in the NEET group (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and are designed to offer young people the opportunity to try something new and give them confidence to attempt a change of direction or a new career. It also aids potential to progress onto longer courses from September 2008.

The Pupil Referral Unit were informed about the college’s Discovery Day programme via Filton’s Connexions service; Connexions offer young people advice and guidance on career / employment training and work closely with external agencies, advising on opportunities like the college’s Discovery Days.

All Discovery Day courses are held over three intensive days and include interview techniques support, CV writing and an Advice and Guidance interview to discuss the next step.

In addition the Animal Care Discovery Day includes:

. course introduction

. basic health and safety

. how to use equipment

. cleaning cages

. learning to handle the animals

. anatomy

Simone Johnston, Inclusion Support Worker from the Pupil Referral Unit comments ‘The students were enthused and excited about furthering their education. This is the first time I have seen the students excited about education and attending any type of schooling institution. The enthusiasm projected by the students is due to the dedication and passion of all the teaching staff in the Animal Sciences department. One Lecturer in particular was compassionate, understanding and took her time to communicate at the right level for the students. She introduced the learners to other faculties and lecturers and made sure the students gathered the correct information in the areas they were interested in.

It was heart warming to see the students from the PRU interacting positively towards other learners and having the opportunity to engage with them on a social and educational level.’
