Barton Peveril Sixth Form College wins University of Oxford essay writing competition

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College student Emma Fleeman has won an essay writing competition run by the University of Oxford’s Merton College. Emma’s essay was one of just 15 selected from a large pool of entries from students around the country.

The competition asked Year 12 students to write a 1000 word Law essay, in response to the statement: “The rich should be obliged to give to the poor because they don’t deserve what they have.”

Emma’s winning essay has now been published on the Merton College website, whilst Emma herself attended the Merton Pre-Law Residential on 4^th and 5^th July. The Residential involved taster sessions with University Law tutors and activities with current Merton College Law students.

Speaking on having one of the few winning entries, the former Wyvern College pupil said: “I am really happy to have had this opportunity and was excited to experience what life is like for Law students at the University of Oxford.”

Barton Peveril’s Careers Manager (Higher Education), Shoonagh Hubble, praised Emma for her achievement:

She is thoroughly deserving of her success. More and more of our students are entering Oxbridge essay competitions and we tend to find that success in these competitions leads to an offer of a university place from Oxford or Cambridge in the future.”
