Online Safety refers to the legal and regulatory framework implemented to safeguard individuals and their digital well-being while using the internet. It involves compliance with specific laws and guidelines designed to protect users from online threats, harassment, and the misuse of personal information.
It is crucial due to the increasing reliance on digital platforms and the potential risks associated with online activities. Ensuring digital safety is not only about protecting individuals from cyber threats but also aligns with UK laws and regulations. It helps prevent online abuse, cyberbullying, and unauthorised use of personal data, promoting a safer and more responsible online community.
Effective from October 26, 2023, the act empowers the Secretary of State to regulate online speech and media. It enforces a duty of care on platforms, including encrypted messengers, for scanning explicit content, with fines for non-compliance. The Act grants Ofcom the authority to block websites and preserves access to “democratically important” content. Despite facing criticism for potential speech restrictions, amendments were made. The Act applies globally to user-to-user services, with specific duties categorised by service types.
