From education to employment

City of Westminster College educator wins City & Guilds Membership Award

Richard Gillis, from City of Westminster College (part of United Colleges Group), has been named as a recipient of the 2025 City & Guilds Foundation Membership Award.

The City & Guilds Foundation announced 19 outstanding tutors and trainers who have gone above and beyond to change lives through skills and training.

This year’s cohort represents a diverse range of organisations and sectors across the UK, including IBM, JCB, Motus Commercials, G4S and leading further education institutions.

Recipients are awarded Membership of the City & Guilds of London Institute (MCGI), an accolade reserved for professionals who have made a sustained and measurable impact within their field.

Richard, from Ealing, a Lecturer in Computing, is recognised for his four-decade-long career dedicated to adult and digital education as he strives to shape inclusion and employability skills at City of Westminster College (CWC) by using his technical expertise with a learner-centred, compassionate approach.

Beginning his career in electronics and computing, Richard has empowered students of all ages to unlock new opportunities.

Known for his calm, empathetic style, he uses storytelling, scenario-based learning and real-world examples to make digital skills accessible to everyone ─ including those who have faced educational barriers. His incredible work supports learners to build confidence, gain essential qualifications and progress into further study or employment.

Chief Assessor Fenella Tallon said: “What stood out this year was each tutor and trainer’s passion and commitment in ensuring every learner has the opportunity to succeed regardless of whether they worked for a college, training provider or commercial organisation.

“Not only did they showcase their knowledge and high level of expertise, they also showed how they’re going above and beyond to make a real difference to their learners.”

Stephen Davis, CEO and Group Principal of United Colleges Group, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Richard. His contribution to education, digital development and learner success over four decades has been exceptional. This award not only recognises his outstanding skill and dedication, but it also reflects the values we hold as a college ─ ensuring every learner has the support and opportunity to succeed.”

Dame Ann Limb, Chair of the City & Guilds Foundation, said: “These tutors and trainers are the heart of our skills system; they change lives and inspire others every day. I couldn’t be prouder of this year’s recipients.”

By highlighting the achievements of exceptional educators, the awards aim to inspire others to pursue training excellence, strengthen professional networks and ensure that the UK continues to lead the way in delivering high-quality vocational education.
