Labour reacts to research showing teacher recruitment subsiding

Stephen Morgan

Stephen Morgan MP, Labour’s Shadow Schools Minister, (@StephenMorganMP) commenting on National Foundation for Educational Research that the resurgent labour market post-pandemic has led to the “Covid surge” in teacher recruitment subsiding, said:

“The Conservatives’ decade of failure on teacher recruitment is draining talent from schools and failing our children.

“Forty per cent of teachers leave the profession within four years, and applications to initial teacher training are plummeting, putting unsustainable pressures on our schools, teachers, and children.

“Labour’s National Excellence Programme will recruit thousands of new teachers to plug skills gaps and provide the training they need to thrive in their career and deliver the very best for children.”
