From education to employment

Education and Training Foundation launches Maths and English Shaping Success campaign

The Education and Training Foundation (ETF) has launched a suite of new courses, tips and tools for teachers and trainers across the Further Education (FE) and Training sector, to provide them with additional support in improving progress in maths and English for their learners.

The ETF’s Shaping Success campaign is also in response to Department for Education (DfE) research earlier this year showing students at FE colleges are making less progress in maths and English than any other part of the post-16 education system. Figures show 80% of students who study English and maths after failing to obtain a C at GCSE attend colleges.

Mathematics in particular remains high on the government’s agenda after the recent review of post-16 mathematics by Professor Sir Adrian Smith.

The ETF are offering over 20 different courses to support effective teaching of maths and English for teachers of GCSE, Functional Skills, apprenticeships and study programmes as part of the national Shaping Success campaign.

Each year 4,000 practitioners complete face to face courses with the ETF to improve their teaching approaches in maths and English – and so far, already 11,000 teachers and trainers have benefitted from this training.

Sue SouthwoodSue Southwood, Head of Maths and English at the Education and Training Foundation, said: “Improving outcomes in maths and English is central to success in work and life. Practitioners and providers are expected to ensure maths and English are at the heart of their teaching and employers require a workforce who are competently numerate and literate. We are therefore thrilled to tell you about our new range of courses, tips and tools we have available in our Maths and English Pipeline. If you’re struggling to decide which course is right for you or your organisation, we have Regional Specialist Leads on hand to offer advice and guidance.”

The Shaping Success resources include:

  • Free online modules and self-evaluation tools to develop your personal maths or English skills at Level 2, with some extension to Level 3 and summative tests at Level 2
  • A range of tools, resources and case studies on the Excellence Gateway, our resources portal with dedicated maths and English exhibition sites
  • Top Ten Tips to improve outcomes
  • Guidelines for assessment and tracking, setting out clear expectations of effective practice in assessment for learning
