Rhys Returns to SERC – Interview Gives insight Into Studies, Sport and Success

Commonwealth and European pommel horse champion Rhys McClenaghan BEM (21) (@McClenaghanRhys), took time out of his training schedule recently to call in to South Eastern Regional College (@S_ERC), catch up with the lecturing team and film an interview which is set to encourage the next generation into sport.

The young man from Newtownards successfully completed the BTEC Level 3 Sport at the College’s Bangor Campus in 2018 and has remained in contact with the College, continually providing inspiration for both students and staff. Rhys became the first Irish gymnast to win a World Championship medal last year and was awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours.

Rhys said, “I really enjoyed my time at SERC, making good friends and memories at College. The course allowed flexibility for submitting course work when I was preparing for and attending competitions.

He added, “Being involved in sport has given me tremendous opportunities and aspirations for the future. I encourage everyone to find a sport they love and get involved.”

Lynda Robinson, Assistant Head of School, Applied Science and Sport at SERC said,

“We were thrilled to welcome Rhys back to College. Rhys was a dedicated student at SERC, and we delighted in the opportunity to support him in his studies whilst he pursued his position as an elite athlete.

“He is a fantastic ambassador for sport and all young people – sharing important messages about finding a sport to suit yourself, looking after your mental health and why it is important to take a break from social media. His positivity, determination and focus are inspirational, and we look forward to following his continued success.”
