From education to employment

State-of-the-art health, social and childcare centre has HE accreditation

Award winning Neath Port Talbot College (NPTC) is celebrating the opening of Wales” first specialist health, social and childcare Higher Education (HE) centre.

The flagship centre will act as a focus to attract students of all ages who would like to pursue a career in care or an opportunity to enhance their current employment status.

This month will see the start of a new research programme investigating the effects of social and economic deprivation on health and social problems in the local area.

The self-contained HE centre is located at the College’s Afan Campus in Neath Port Talbot. The centre will be used exclusively for the delivery of HE courses, in an environment where students can flourish, and establish a university identity. As an accredited College of the University of Glamorgan, the development of the centre will enable the College to offer more degree programmes.

The newly refurbished building includes first class equipment and facilities with disabled access, including six designated teaching rooms with interactive white boards, two tutorial rooms, an IT suite with a comprehensive online support system providing access to online journals, text books and relevant university resources, and a student common room.

Mary Golding Lloyd, HE course director at NPTC, said: “Our commitment to widening access and attracting non-traditional students into Higher Education is a top priority for us and by investing in our new Higher Education centre we are able to increase our provision of HE courses. As the only FE College to offer full honours degree programmes in Care Studies and Childcare Studies, we are proud that the College offers the facilities to ensure that all residents in the Neath Port Talbot area can benefit from continued teaching excellence on their doorstep.”
