Skills Plus initiative for staff to improve literacy and numeracy.

“P&O Ferries opens new horizons in adult learning with support for Skills Plus

Learning opportunities for adults in Kent to increase their literacy and numeracy received further support today, after P&O Ferries endorsed Skills Plus.

Skills Plus, a free tailor-made class designed to help adults improve their English and Maths, is being offered to all P&O staff in its fleets, after staff successfully completed courses organised by Kent County Council’s Adult Education Service.

Skills Plus helps to develop skills through the use of materials and activities that closely matches the needs of the individual student.

Mike Hill, Cabinet Member for Community Services at Kent County Council explained: “This is a great example of how businesses can get behind their staff and help them improve their education to benefit individuals and the organisation.”

Leading to a nationally recognised qualification, Skills Plus aims to further develop skills and prospects through group based learning, as well as giving students the opportunity to receive individual support.

He continued, “Skills Plus is worthwhile for all those needing to brush up their reading and Maths or those who may have missed out on the formal qualifications at school. I am delighted P&O staff have really reaped the rewards of adult learning.”
