From education to employment

Wales FE rebrands as college students celebrate

fforwm, the body representing all of Wales’ 24 FE colleges, will now be known as ColegauCymru / CollegesWales to boost its collective identity on the national stage.

John Graystone, chief executive, says the rebranding helps “the Welsh Assembly Government put into practice its aim of creating a world-class bilingual Welsh economy based on a highly skilled workforce”.

Mr Graystone continues: “Colleges are at the centre of post-16 education policy-making. Demand for post-16 learning is increasing. In a global economy and increasingly so during a recession, more individuals need further education to get into work, to stay in work, and to go further at work. Companies, too, need education partners to stay afloat in challenging times and forge ahead of the competition. And also importantly, FE colleges can inspire young people and adults towards lifelong learning. Education throughout life contributes towards improving general health and well-being.

“For the last 15 years, colleges have delivered key policy messages to decision-makers through fforwm. I am proud of the achievements of fforwm and hope that the new name – ColegauCymru / CollegesWales – which reflects more directly the FE Colleges we represent – will bring even more recognition for the key role colleges play in Wales’ economy and society.”

Students, local businesses and communities in Wales are meanwhile honing their winning talents for the Colleges Week festivities.

Highly talented students in South Wales are hoping for a winning streak as the Battle of the Bands gets underway, while Miniversity Challenge, hosted by broadcaster Jason Mohammad, will test the brain power of students and their friends from local communities.

“College students are celebrating Colleges Week by having fun! College life isn’t all about hard work. We all have our talents and Colleges Week provides an opportunity for students to hone and use their talents for the benefit of others,” adds Mr Graystone.

“Community services; brainy entertainment; artistic competitions; dance, music, catering and floral spectaculars; charity fundraising; and even a petition to change the world – it’s all happening in Colleges Week. I hope that everyone involved in Colleges Week finds their winning streak and enjoys having the opportunity to benefit their local communities.”
