A Helping Hand for Ceri

Starting college wasn’t the easiest of journeys for Brecon Beacons College Child Care student Ceri Evans.

Ceri admits she struggled with assignments and had difficulty in completing some work.

As time passed, lecturer Rachel Halsey realised something wasn’t quite right and from this Ceri was tested for dyslexia, and later diagnosed with the condition.

Ceri was given support by lecturers and as well as one-to-one support she was given different reading materials.

From this Ceri was able to complete her Level 3 qualification as well as additionally choosing to complete extended assignments, which are equivalent to three University assignments.

Ceri has now returned to the College to complete her Level 5 Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies, which is a two-year course. After completion, Ceri will be able to join University for one year as part of a top-up course for the full degree.

Ceri hopes to finish the degree course and peruse her dreams of becoming a primary school teacher and adds:

“The time and support that my lecturers gave me allowed me to gain the confidence to achieve good results.  Without the College’s support, I wouldn’t have been able to access the Level 5 course, this is a great course as I can work around my degree.”
