From education to employment

Barnsley College motorsport students steer their future

Barnsley College students had the opportunity to find out about the careers available within the motorsport industry at the Motorsport and Automotive Jobs Fair that was held at Silverstone.

The Level 2 and Level 3 Motorsport students visited Europe’s largest indoor motorsport employment event where they chatted to staff and race engineers from leading motorsport organisations such as Haas F1, Lotus, Mahle and the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA).

Students were given helpful advice on the jobs and Higher Education courses available and the progression routes they would need to take in order to achieve a successful career within the motorsport and automotive industry.

A number of workshops also took place throughout the day which focused on employability skills and provided students with CV tips and advice on how to get the best out of an interview.

The highlight of the day was when students had the chance to watch a race event at the famous Silverstone circuit.

Darren Speight, Course Leader for Motorsport at the College, said: “This was an excellent opportunity for our students to get careers advice directly from professionals within the motorsport industry. For example, staff from Haas F1 spoke to some of our students with regards to the experience they would need in order to work in Formula One racing.”

Level 3 Motorsport student Ryan North added: “It was a really useful day and I am now interested in studying a postgraduate qualification at Cranfield University after speaking to their lead lecturer.”
