Barry College welcomes more than 1,500 GCSE students at special Colleges Week event

More than 1,500 local GCSE learners and other members of the community came to learn about life at Barry College this week as part of the nationwide College Week celebrations. Barry College learners were on hand to tell local GCSE students all about College life at the special event.

The College threw its doors open to Year 11 learners and the wider community at an Opening Evening held during Colleges Week. Student Ambassadors were present throughout the evening, ready to answer any questions visitors might have about coming to study at Barry College.

As well as guided tours, where people visited the College’s facilities and looked in on classes in action, useful short talks were given. One talk concentrated on the financial help that is available for College learners, while the other focused on tips and techniques for having a successful College interview.

Information on all College courses was available, and Course Tutors gave information about the wide range of courses Barry College offers. Careers advisors were present to give people advice about making the right choices after the GCSE results come in next summer.

The Red Dragon Radio ‘Thunders’ crew supported the Open Evening and there were lots of other activities.

Jamie Sneddon, a Student Ambassador who sits on the College’s Board of Governors, said: “Open Evenings are a great opportunity to give people a learner’s perspective on coming to Barry College. The Student Ambassadors are more than happy to answer any questions people might have about College.

“People coming straight from school might have concerns about moving on up to College and we can reassure them about that.”

Barry College Principal Paul Halstead said: “Open Evenings are a fantastic opportunity for GCSE learners, and the local community, to find out all about Barry College and what it has to offer them. We thought opening our doors and inviting people to come and see us would be an excellent way of celebrating Colleges Week.”
