Music students team up with Neurocare for charity music showcase
Level 4 BA Popular Music Performance and Production students are working together to fundraise for Neurocare Charity, Sheffield Royal Hallamshire Hospital by staging a music fundraiser entitled Heads Together at local venue The Ryecroft Club.
Neurocare raises money for Sheffield’s world-leading neuroscience departments to improve and save the lives of local patients with neurological conditions. The charity was chosen because of student Kayley Andrew’s experience at Sheffield Royal Hallamshire, when her Dad received care at the hospital.
Kayley said, “In May 2018 I unfortunately lost my dad after he suffered multiple strokes and bleeding on the brain. He was cared for in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Hallamshire hospital in Sheffield. Throughout his stay, Neurocare and the staff at the Royal Hallamshire hospital provided truly the best possible care and were so sympathetic and sensitive to the needs of my family during this incredibly difficult time. Nothing was too much for them and everything both my dad and family required was handled with respect and kindness, along with a friendly and warm attitude.
“Because of the outstanding work Neurocare do for neuro wards in Sheffield and for the care they gave to my dad and many other patients, I suggested to my peers that they be the chosen charity for our fundraising event. Everyone involved has supported my situation and made this event something I will remember forever. Doing this for my dad has been a really comforting way to sit back and remember our time fondly; talking about him with family just reminds me of how special he truly was and how much this charity really means to so many people like myself.”
The show will have mix of musical genres, from classic rock to an acoustic performance from student Katie Greaves, and includes sets from student bands as well as blues band Black Toad, with music Curriculum Team Leader Andi Rae playing guitar.
Rob Bellis, Lecturer and Skills Assessor at University Centre Rotherham (UCR), added,
“The main learning outcomes of this project is to plan a live event like you would in the real working world, which involves marketing, logistics and planning, managing finance and even creating contracts to manage the bands.
“Of course as tutors we’re here to support, but this is their chance to stand on their own two feet and create something that they’re proud of.”
Heads Together is at The Ryecroft Club in Rawmarsh on Friday 19th April, from 7.30pm until late. Tickets are £4.50 and you can buy these in advance from Rotherham College by calling 01709 722749 or on the door on the evening of the event.
