From education to employment

Tameside College plumbing apprentice has the ‘tools’ for success

A Tameside College apprentice has been selected to receive a prestigious award by the Worshipful Company of Plumbers.

Darren Yarwood, a plumbing apprentice employed by PWS Installations, has been awarded a £1000 tool bursary to develop his career in the industry.

The Worshipful Company of Plumbers is one of the ‘livery companies’ of London and has regulated the industry since 1365. The organisation awards six bursaries to apprentices across the UK each year, selecting those with passion and dedication to the plumbing trade.

Darren travelled to Cannon Street Station in London to receive the bursary certificate from Dame Fiona Woolf, former lord mayor of London. Darren was also treated to a lunch with members of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers at the organisation’s guild hall.

Darren, said: “I am over the moon with the bursary award because it will allow me to further my career and allows me to acquire top quality tools that I just wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise. Thank you to the Worshipful Company of Plumbers for this amazing opportunity.”

Darren will now be able to purchase £1000 worth of tools from Monument Tools Ltd for use in his career.

Ian Hall, plumbing teacher at Tameside College, said: “This is a very proud moment for Darren, myself and Tameside College. To be selected nationally, from thousands of apprentices, is very humbling and I hope that he will use this award to make the most of the journey to becoming a fully qualified plumber.”
