Preethy develops her skills with distance learning!

Preethy Jacob, Senior Theatre Practitioner at Queen’s Hospital Burton has not only been facing the challenges brought on by the pandemic at work but she has also been challenging herself in her own time with online learning via Burton and South Derbyshire College (@BSDCofficial).

Preethy began the Level 3 Leadership and Management (ILM) distance learning course before the pandemic began and continued to study throughout, despite the exceptional circumstances she was facing at the hospital.

The Level 3 Leadership and Management (ILM) qualification allows learners to understand techniques for planning, organising and allocating work. Learners develop knowledge of managing conflict, performance and stress management in the workplace and build confidence as they learn how to motivate and manage a team effectively. The course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge needed to work as a successful manager or effective leader.

Preethy undertook the course via the Distance Learning team at BSDC, which consisted of a combination of online resources and access to a tutor for advice and support, providing her with the flexibility to study from home when she could find the time.

Preethy commented: “I undertook the course for career progression and to increase my confidence in my skills as a team leader. I started the course before the start of the pandemic and while work did get very hectic and stressful when the pandemic began, I was determined to see it through.

“It wasn’t easy managing work, study and family commitments but I managed it. My tutor was really supportive and while it was a distance learning course that I completed from home, the tutor was always at the other end of an email or phone call which really helped me through.

“I see the qualification as another feather in my cap and I would like to progress to the Level 5 course next. I believe if you want to achieve something, you’ll find a way!”

Preethy’s tutor, Jackie West commented: It was a pleasure to support Preethy on her distance learning journey. Her determination to succeed in difficult circumstances was an inspiration. I also learned a great deal from her, as I discovered how complex a Senior Theatre Practitioner’s role is. Thank you Preethy for all you and your colleagues have done for us during this difficult time!”
