Volunteering is a hit with compassionate student
Barnsley College (@BarnsleyCollege) Higher Education Criminology, Communities and Criminal Justice Foundation Degree student, Emily Neesam, volunteers for an independent charity that works towards a world where people affected by crime or traumatic events get the support and respect they deserve.
Working as a volunteer, Emily participates in ensuring that victims feel safe and supported, from providing guidance through any trials to making them feel safe by having security cameras fitted. Her main priorities are to promote safety and help victims to find the strength they need to move beyond the crimes they have experienced.
Emily said: “I wanted to find something I could really get my teeth into and this work really does that for me. Thankfully, with the charity I have been put through many different training programmes and I’m grateful that I’ve been able to expand on my knowledge as that will help me academically. Volunteering has really changed my outlook for my future career, and I am so grateful that I have been given this opportunity.
“I just want to say thank you to the tutors at Barnsley College Higher Education for planting the volunteering seed in my head. Without their encouragement I don’t think I’d have had the confidence to even apply for the volunteering opportunity in the first place.”
Luke Hellewell, Public Services HE Pathway Leader at Barnsley College, added:
“We are incredibly proud of Emily. Work experience will really set her apart when she applies for her chosen career or job. It’s a pleasure to teach such a driven and motivated student.”
