Team Wales won a total of 16 gold, 19 silver, 17 bronze and 17 highly commended medals at the WorldSkills UK National Final competitions, as more than 400 students and apprentices from across the UK battled it out to be named best in their skill.

The medal winners were announced by TV presenter Steph McGovern during a special medal ceremony.

A record-breaking 145 competitors represented Wales in the competitive skills events which took place in 23 locations across the UK earlier this month including Cardiff, Swansea and Deeside.

Competitions took place in 64 different skills categories across four industry sectors: engineering and technology; digital, business and creative; health, hospitality and lifestyle; and construction and infrastructure.

WorldSkills is a global movement of over 80 countries that take part in a biennial “skills Olympics” to showcase best international practice in apprenticeships and technical education and celebrate young people’s vocational achievements.

The next WorldSkills final will take place in Shanghai, China, in 2022, with a strong representation of Welsh competitors battling it out to be selected to represent Team UK.

While theWelsh competitors from this year’s UK National Finals have the opportunity to compete for a place in Squad UK for the 47^th WorldSkills final being held in Lyon, France, in 2024.

Reflecting on Team Wales’ success, Minister for Economy and Skills, Vaughan Gething, said:

“Our young people hold the key to Wales’ future success. The Welsh Government, working with our partners, is determined to provide them with opportunities to learn the skills they’ll need to fulfil their true potential.

“So I’m delighted a record-breaking 145 competitors have represented Wales at this important competition. It’s a testament to the very talented young people we have here in Wales.

“Nurturing our talent will be key as we reshape our economy post-coronavirus pandemic to make it more resilient to change and to the challenges of the future. Through our ambitious Young Person’s Guarantee, we’ll ensure our future Welsh workforce is provided with the opportunities to help build a brighter future for themselves, and for Wales.

Cystadleuwyr o Gymru yn casglu 69 o fedalau yn rownd derfynol WorldSkills UK

Enillodd Tîm Cymru gyfanswm o 16 medal aur, 19 arian, 17 efydd a 17 o fedalau â chanmoliaeth uchel yng nghystadlaethau terfynol WorldSkills UK, wrth i 400 a mwy o fyfyrwyr a phrentisiaid o bob cwr o’r DU ymgiprys am deitl y goreuon yn eu maes.

Cyhoeddwyd enwau’r enillwyr gan y cyflwynydd teledu Steph McGovern mewn seremoni wobrwyo arbennig.

Roedd 145 yn cynrychioli Cymru, sef y nifer fwyaf erioed, mewn digwyddiadau sgiliau cystadleuol a gynhaliwyd mewn 23 o leoliadau ar hyd a lled y DU yn gynharach yn y mis gan gynnwys Caerdydd, Abertawe a Glannau Dyfrdwy.

Cynhaliwyd cystadlaethau mewn 64 o gategorïau sgiliau gwahanol ar draws pedwar sector diwydiant: peirianneg a thechnoleg; digidol, busnes a chreadigol; iechyd, lletygarwch a ffordd o fyw; adeiladu a seilwaith.

Mae WorldSkills yn fudiad byd-eang o dros 80 o wledydd sy’n cymryd rhan mewn “gemau Olympaidd sgiliau” bob dwy flynedd i arddangos arferion rhyngwladol gorau mewn prentisiaethau ac addysg dechnegol a dathlu llwyddiannau galwedigaethol y to ifanc.

Cynhelir rownd derfynol nesaf WorldSkills yn Shanghai, Tsieina, yn 2022, gyda chynrychiolaeth gref o Gymru yn gobeithio mynd ymlaen i gynrychioli Tîm y DU.

Bydd y cystadleuwyr Cymreig aeth i rowndiau terfynol y DU eleni yn gobeithio cael eu henwi yng ngharfan Tîm y DU ar gyfer rownd derfynol rhif 47ain WorldSkills yn Lyon, Ffrainc, yn 2024.

Wrth fyfyrio ar lwyddiant Tîm Cymru, dywedodd Vaughan Gething, Gweinidog yr Economi a Sgiliau:

“Ein pobl ifanc yw’r allwedd i lwyddiant ein cenedl yn y dyfodol. Mae Llywodraeth Cymru, ar y cyd â’n partneriaid, yn benderfynol o roi cyfleoedd iddyn nhw ddysgu’r sgiliau angenrheidiol i wireddu eu llawn botensial.

“Dw i wrth fy modd gyda’r 145 o gystadleuwyr sydd wedi cynrychioli Cymru yn y gystadleuaeth bwysig hon, sy’n record. Mae’n glod i’r holl bobl ifanc dawnus sydd gennym ni yma yng Nghymru.

“Bydd meithrin ein talent yn allweddol wrth inni ailwampio ein heconomi ar ôl pandemig y coronafeirws, yn barod i wrthsefyll newidiadau a heriau’r dyfodol. Trwy ein Gwarant i Bobl Ifanc uchelgeisiol, byddwn yn sicrhau bod gweithlu’r dyfodol yn cael pob cyfle i greu dyfodol mwy disglair iddyn nhw eu hunain ac i Gymru.

“Mae cystadlaethau WorldSkills yn codi ymwybyddiaeth o werth a grym sgiliau i drawsnewid bywydau, economïau a chymdeithas. Llongyfarchiadau calonnog i bawb fu’n cymryd rhan.”
