#SignLanguageWeek signing the way to student finance

The Student Loans Company (SLC) is supporting Sign Language Week 2019 (18 – 24 March) with the launch of a new suite of British Sign Language (BSL) videos aimed at prospective students with deafness and hearing loss in England.

SLC has been creating BSL videos since 2016 and this year’s additions bring their total number to 24.

The videos cover a range of important student finance topics, including;

  • understanding the types of funding available
  • how to apply for finance
  • how repayment works
  • when it starts, and
  • getting to grips with interest

Prospective students in England can apply for repayable loans to cover tuition fees and to help with living costs.  Disabled Student’s Allowance (DSAs) may also be available to help pay for extra costs a student might have as a result of a disability, long-term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia.

Derek Ross, Director of Operations said:

“As applications for the forthcoming academic year are open, we’re aiming to make sure that new and prospective students have the information that they need to make informed decisions about student finance and how to apply.  With our latest suite of BSL videos we’re strengthening our commitment to get that information to our customers in a way that works for them. With this in mind we’re proud to launch our latest suite of BSL videos this week to coincide with Sign Language Week.”
