Businesses to receive free training in run up to 2012

The London Development Agency (LDA) is offering businesses of all sizes free training in the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Businesses will be able to take advantage of free training in language and cultural skills, and Regional Language Network London will also help prepare employers for the much-anticipated upturn in the economy.

The programme is focused on frontline services such as the hospitality and retail industries.

"As the most diverse city on earth, where more than 300 languages are spoken on our streets, London is superbly placed to welcome the world both now and in the run up to and beyond the 2012 Games. It is, therefore, vital that we get to know the hundreds of different nationalities who will inevitably visit and do business with our city during and after the Games," said London Mayor Boris Johnson.

"To win business and attract visitors through this huge opportunity means more than offering a warm welcome. We must also demonstrate that we are first rate communicators, to show we understand and empathise with their different needs. The training opportunities we are extending will be invaluable to all those businesses who are serious about taking on the overseas competition."

LDA and Mr Johnson launched the Mayor of London's Economic Recovery Action Plan last December. The Plan included an additional 23.4 million pounds to support small businesses.

Jane Collis, director of RLN London, said: "In a competitive global economy you need to make sure your business has the edge over the competition - and that you really are communicating with your customers - wherever they are and whatever their language or culture.

"RLN London is dedicated to helping businesses do just that with free advice and information. As we build up to the 2012 Games and the world’s eyes are on London, it’s a great opportunity for every business to ‘think international’."
