Competition Launched to take Students to World Cup via Language and Living Skills

A competition has been launched that gives UK students the chance to travel to Munich to watch the football World Cup this summer if they can demonstrate their knowledge of European languages and a commitment to healthy living.

Starwatch is funded by the European Union, and is being launched in the UK by CILT, the National Centre for Languages, the body in charge of heightening national capability in languages and encouraging multilingualism. Timed to coincide with the World Cup, and aimed at promoting knowledge of languages, health and fitness to young people across Europe, the project has received the help of 21 international footballers. Representing the England team are Steven Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves.

Fit Like Your Champ

By July 1st, resource packs for the Starwatch “Fit Like Your Champ” competition will have been sent to all UK secondary schools. They include information, posters, and support materials on innovative language learning, football, nutrition and fitness. Students of 12-18 will be encouraged to choose a favourite footballing hero, and show how he or she stays fit. Other activities include worksheets, quizzes and a website with information in German, Italian, Dutch and Czech. Pupils will also be encouraged to form fitness teams in order to train in groups.

The competition is taking place as part of a Europe-wide youth festival, which is timed to coincide with the World Cup, and will involve around 100,000 young people from across the continent. The winning projects from the Starwatch competition win their creators a trip to the final event in Munich on 4th July.
