Northbrook MET fashion students go from rags to riches

Fashion & textiles students from Northbrook Metropolitan College have created eco-conscious garments from ‘rags’ donated by local Marie Curie charity shops. 

The students transformed the unwanted rags into unique, fashionable items of clothing. Alongside pattern cutting, students used a variety of print and fabric techniques to alter their rags and communicate sustainable messaging.

This exciting project gave the students an opportunity to work with fabrics that they would not necessarily have used before, broadening their skill set and gaining valuable experience.

Speaking about this exciting project, Carolyn Harrison, Level 3 Fashion & Textiles Course Leader, commented: “The collaboration between Marie Curie and the students has been such a challenging, innovative and rewarding one. Our students tackled the brief in a very professional manner, showing great creativity, passion, awareness and ambition to push themselves into creating magnificent pieces of work. 

“The project culminated in staging a photoshoot in order to showcase their creations. I’m extremely impressed by the student’s response to this project and what they have managed to achieve.”

The manager of the Marie Curie charity shop said: “These are fabulous, your students have done an amazing job.”
