Students honour Remembrance Day through creative designs
Students from the 3D and Mixed Media Design and Fashion and Textiles programmes at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) have once again demonstrated their creativity and community spirit by producing a range of handcrafted and digitally manufactured items in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
3D and Mixed Media learners have continued to build on previous years’ products while expanding the range with new and innovative designs, including Lest We Forget key fobs; ceramic items ranging from coasters to jewellery; 3D-printed aircraft designed to hold poppy pins; 3D-printed bookmarks; and a collection of striking soldier sculptures created using a combination of 3D printing and laser cutting.
The Creative Department has proudly supported the appeal for a number of years, providing students with opportunities to apply their practical skills to meaningful community projects while raising funds for an important cause.
Bill Moorley, Course Leader at BSDC said: “We’re proud to support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal again this year. Our students have shown incredible creativity and dedication, not only in their designs but in their personal engagement with the meaning behind Remembrance Day. This project continues to offer valuable real-world experience while making a positive impact in our community.”
Fashion and Textiles learners embraced sustainability throughout the project, carefully repurposing materials to create a range of beautiful, handcrafted poppy-inspired pieces. Their bespoke designs, produced in various sizes and styles, reflect both the symbolism of remembrance and the students’ commitment to sustainable creative practice.
Public Services students will also be supporting the initiative by selling the wide range of products alongside poppies at Coopers Square Shopping Centre and local supermarkets from Thursday 22nd October until Saturday 7th November, helping to raise funds in support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
The project has allowed learners to develop and showcase a wide range of traditional and digital making skills while contributing to a cause that honours those who have served and sacrificed. Through their dedication, creativity, and teamwork, BSDC students have produced an impressive collection of items that celebrate remembrance and support the ongoing work of the Royal British Legion.
The success of the project highlights the wide range of creative opportunities available to students at Burton and South Derbyshire College. From traditional craft techniques to cutting-edge digital manufacturing, learners develop industry-relevant skills through real-world projects that make a difference in the local community.
