The Sandwell Colleges Raise Funds For Macmillan With Coffee Afternoon At Midland Metropolitan University Hospital

Health & Social Care students from The Sandwell Colleges proudly hosted a Macmillan Coffee Afternoon at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, raising more than £490 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Organised by Year 1 learners, the event was a fantastic showcase of their talent, professionalism and enthusiasm.

From welcoming visitors and serving refreshments to selling cakes and engaging with members of the public, the students helped create a warm and welcoming atmosphere across both the stand on Floor 5 of the hospital and the Colleges’ base at the adjacent Learning Campus.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for students to put their learning into practice, developing their communication and interpersonal skills while speaking with patients, NHS colleagues and visitors about their experiences of studying Health & Social Care.

It was inspiring to see them growing in confidence, building connections within the local community and representing the Colleges so positively.

The Colleges’ NHS partners at Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust kindly supported the event and gave students the opportunity to host it within the hospital.

Working together in support of Macmillan Cancer Support demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved when education, healthcare and the wider community come together for a shared cause.

Health & Social Care Lecturer Sophie Alexandris said:

“We are absolutely delighted to share that, together, we raised an incredible £490.33. Our TOQ Year 1 students were truly amazing throughout the event. The students demonstrated confidence and professionalism and it was fantastic to see them developing their communication skills, building connections with our local community and putting their learning into practice.”

Launched earlier this year, Sandwell College @ The Learning Campus is a ground-breaking education and skills hub for health and social care in Birmingham.

Students and adult learners train in a real healthcare environment, based in the heart of the NHS, and gain the experience, knowledge and confidence needed to move into careers in health,
care and related industries.

The Learning Campus has been designed to bring together academic learning and hands-on experience, helping Health and Social Care students understand what it takes to work in the sector.

Students benefit from industry-standard facilities that mirror real clinical environments including a fully equipped simulation hospital ward, a realistic A&E training area, community health settings, and modern teaching and learning spaces.

These facilities reflect real equipment and working environments within the NHS, helping students build confidence and practical skills from day one.

Through The Sandwell Colleges’ partnerships with the NHS Trust, the hospital and Higher Education providers, students benefit from expert teaching and up-to-date, relevant training that reflects the needs of employers.
