Budding Entrepreneurs Tame the Dragons

Barnsley College welcomed prospective students to a Business taster class to explore the subject in more detail.

Over 40 prospective Level 1 and 2 Business and AAT Accounting students attended the session where they participated in a range of activities and presentations focused on finance, marketing and general business.

The attendees were set a group project to create a new brand identity for a t-shirt printing company and to design a t-shirt promoting the World Cup or Love Island which would be sold at Leeds Festival. The students worked to a budget and calculated what price the t-shirts would need to be sold at in order to create a profit. They also had to identify companies who they could approach for sponsorship to raise additional capital along with reasons why the companies would be suitable to sponsor the product. To finish the day, the students presented their branding and t-shirt designs to staff in a Dragon’s Den style pitch to gain additional funding.

Attendee Lewis Fishlock, 16, of Rose Avenue, Darfield, said: “I’m pleased I came to the taster session, it was lots of fun! I enjoyed the whole day, especially the theory-based activities and I feel more comfortable in the College’s surroundings.”

Nevada Southward, 16, of Newton Grange, Hemsworth, added: “I’ve enjoyed the taster session and I’d recommend others to attend a class if they can. I’ve made friends with people who will be on my course and we’ve arranged to meet up over the summer holidays.”
