Delight As Pub Girl Sarah Herrick Scoops Award

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) were delighted to have Sarah Herrick awarded the 2006 Apprentice of the Year title on the 15th June 2006.

At the ceremony held at the London Hilton, Sarah Herrick from Leicester was presented with her award by the television presenter award ceremony hosts Natasha Kaplinsky and Richard Hammond. Sarah, a 22 year-old who signed up for an apprenticeship after starting work at the Crown Inn pub explained: “The licensee, Ian Taylor, encouraged me to sign up for an apprenticeship.

“The training has enabled me to develop and engage with a variety of roles and responsibilities as well as achieving nationally recognised qualifications,” she continued. “To win the Award was a great honour.” Since starting her apprenticeship Sarah’s career has progressed rapidly. She is now working closely with the pub’s kitchen staff, supervising staff and planning the restaurant’s menus. The Crown Inn has also reaped the benefits of Sarah’s training, as her event management skills have helped to improve profits.

Sarah has been so delighted with her progress that she is eagerly waiting to join the advanced apprenticeship. She said: “My apprenticeship has a huge impact on my career and I feel that it is brilliantly beneficial. It has boosted my confidence in myself and my capabilities have no boundaries. I have made my family hugely proud of me and it gives me great satisfaction to talk to our customers about what I am doing.” Ian Taylor commented: “Sarah is the most rounded, committed individual I have ever had the pleasure to work with.”

Mary Curnock Cook, of the QCA, said: “Apprenticeships are extremely valuable in equipping learners with occupational skills and giving them the opportunity to learn from industry in supportive, practical settings, firing their imagination and stimulating their learning. I congratulate Sarah on winning this year’s QCA sponsored Apprentice of the Year Award. It is time that we celebrated the very real achievements of young people in this country. Well done Sarah.”
