Will NATFHE and the AUT Become One?

This weekend sees the annual conference of NATFHE, The University and College Lecturer’s Union, which takes place in Eastbourne on Saturday the 28th of May. And there is certainly much to be debated, with the funding shortfall beginning to bite in the FE colleges leading to prospective redundancies of NATFHE members and the strikes that are currently taking place at a number of colleges nationwide.

Another key issue to be decided is the proposed merger of the AUT with NATFHE, creating a far larger “super union”. Members are to balloted on this proposal over the course of the conference.

Amongst the speakers at this weekend’s conference will be Paul Mackney, the General Secretary of NATFHE, Sam Allen, President of NATFHE, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber, NUT General Secretary Steve Sinnot and AUT General Secretary Sally Hunt.
