Leading North Wales college wins 50 medals at national skills competition
COLEG CAMBRIA won a staggering 50 medals in 22 categories at last night’s (Thursday) Skills Competition Wales ceremony.
The college hosted a ‘satellite’ event at its Yale campus in Wrexham, where learners were rewarded for their talent and hard work by Chief Executive Yana Williams and representatives from Inspiring Skills Excellence, who delivered the results via an online prizegiving.
Among the successful cohort were 15 gold medallists in finals including Popular Music, Mechatronics, IT Network Security, Inclusive Skills Woodwork, Inclusive Skills Automotive Technology, Construction Metalwork and Aeronautical Engineering.
Cambria’s Learner Experience and Enterprise Manager Rona Griffiths paid tribute to all participants for their dedication and commitment to the competition.
“One of the most incredible things is the diverse and wide range of categories we successfully competed in,” said Rona.
“It stands us in good stead ahead of this year’s WorldSkills UK finals and is testament to the support and guidance of our lecturers and staff, who go above and beyond to have the students ready for these competitions.”
She added: “To be among the elite in so many different disciplines is amazing, so well done again and congratulations to all of the medallists.”
Skills Competition Wales aims to raise the profile of skills in Wales and offers students, trainees, and apprentices in Wales a chance to challenge, benchmark and raise their skills by taking part in competitions across a range of sectors.
Funded by the Welsh Government and run by a dedicated network of colleges, work-based learning providers and employer-led organisations, it consists of a series of local skills competitions, aligned to WorldSkills and the needs of the Welsh economy.
Other categories included Photography, Plastering, Welding, Childcare, CNC Turning and Hairdressing.
Ms Williams congratulated all those who had taken part and said the standard of competition continues to rise.
“Year on year we strive for improvement and Skills Competition Wales is an example of how, with hard work and determination, you can achieve it,” she added.
“To get to this level is a great honour, and to win medals in such a broad range of areas shows just how skilled our students are.
“We are so proud of you all for representing us so brilliantly on this stage and wish you luck for the future.”
